Taüll v 2.0

eng Taüll typeface has been improved with the new font format OpenType. It allows more glyphs within the font. So, more ligatures and some alternate characters have been included.
Good news for those old fellows who had already licenced Taüll: they can get the upgraded version as complimentary. It is necessary to provide user name and license number.
NOTE: This offer is available until August 2010.

esp El tipo Taüll se presenta en un nuevo formato OpenType. Dicho formato permite incluir muchos más glifos dentro del mapa básico de caracteres. De esta manera, Taüll OpenType incorpora más ligaduras y algunos caracteres alternativos que mejoran el aspecto del texto.
Aquellos amigos que hayan adquirido las licencias de uso de Taüll podrán obtener gratuitamente una actualización de esta familia. Para ello tendrán que facilitarnos su nombre como usuario, así como el número de licencia.

Guaraní en Typerepublic

En respeto a otras lenguas y culturas, Typerepublic ha decidido incorporar en su set de caracteres aquellos correspondientes al idioma Guaraní. Con ello, Typerepublic es la primera fundición independiente que toma esta iniciativa, aunque los caracteres del Guaraní no están todavía reconocidos dentro del sistema Unicode. Esperamos que, con esta iniciativa, se tome consciencia de la existencia de otras lenguas que merecen igual reconocimiento.

«El idioma Guaraní es lengua co-oficial en el Paraguay. Lo hablan alrededor de cinco millones de personas. Se habla en el noreste de Argentina (Corrientes, Misiones, Formosa y parte de la provincia del Chaco); en la provincia de Corrientes es lengua oficial (junto con el castellano). Además se habla el sur de Brasil y el Chaco boliviano. Es la lengua nativa de los guaraníes, un pueblo autóctono de la zona, pero goza de un uso extenso también fuera de la etnia especialmente en Paraguay. En la América precolonial se empleó regularmente por pueblos que vivían al este de la Cordillera de los Andes, desde el mar Caribe hasta el Río de la Plata». Fuente: Wikipedia.

Por el momento están ya disponibles las familias Pradell y Carmen. Ambas incorporan caracteres como el ‘puso’, así como aquellos caracteres que incorporan la virgulilla como signo diacrítico.

Carmen black joins the family

eng Our Carmen family has been enlarged and improved. From 2010, it'll include a black version together with the regular, italic, display and fiesta styles. Although the ‘fiesta’ style is sold separately, the Carmen family package will include the black style together with the regular, italic and diplay fonts. Four fonts at the same regular price!
Carmen regular, italic and display have been improved with few more ligatures, including some new characters for Guaraní language.

Aunque el tipo «Carmen Fiesta» se distribuye por separado, a partir de este próximo año el volumen «Carmen» estará compuesto por las fuentes regular, italic, black y display.
Las mejoras en la familia incluyen algunos nuevos caracteres, incorporando aquellos necesarios para la composición de textos en Guaraní.

José Scaglione (typetogether.com) and Andreu Balius will present a talk about the history and contemporary use of the "eñe" caracter in spanish-speaking countries. The lecture will be part of the main conference programme of annual ATypI, happening at MIDE, in the historical center of México City.

Ñ: A sign to convey a sound
The alphabet used by the Romans –Latin– had twenty-one letters and it was enough for all the phonemes needed to articulate it. But as its descendants developed, they gave birth to new phonemes, new sounds that evolved out of spoken Latin, and they presented problems of spelling. Scribes had to find new ways of representing new sounds. This lecture describes in detail the development and use of one of these sounds, the ntilde character, which became a symbol of literature and culture for all the spanish-speaking countries in the world. The “ñ” is the uncontested representative of the spanish language, currently spoken by over 400 million people around the globe and the most studied romance tongue in the world.

Andreu Balius will present another talk, together with Albert Corbeto about the collection of punches from the spanish Royal Printing House. The lecture will be also a part of the main conference programme of the ATypI, happening at MIDE, in the historical center of México City.

The aim of this talk is to show and put into context the typographic materials, currently kept in Barcelona, which used to belong to the Spanish Royal Printing Press typefoundry, together with the study tasks that are being done on them. This remarkably rich collection is made up of a thousand punches, most of them cut by Jerónimo Gil for the Royal Library typefoundry during the second half of the eighteenth century, and of others that were either made by foreign punchcutters or at the Royal Printing Press Engraving and Punchcutting School. A large number of sets of matrices have also been kept, among which it is worth mentioning the ones belonging to the Italian typographer Giambattista Bodoni and those of the Frenchmen Didot and Molé.

eng Carmen typeface has been choosen by Typogrpahica website as one of the best of 2008. In Christian Palino’s words «Carmen is full of tension and surprise while traveling a well-worn road that reaches from Spain through France and into Italy. Commissioned for a new edition of Prosper Merimée’s book Carmen, Andreu Balius tells us that this Didone typeface draws inspiration from 1830s Spanish type specimens that were clearly rooted in the famous work of the Frenchman Firmin Didot. While there seem to be new Didone faces every day, the refined Carmen brings something new to the table, balancing somewhere between the illustrious work of Frutiger for Linotype and the smart, witty approach of a face like Porchez’s Ambroise. Pradell Opentype eng Pradell family is now available in OpenType. The new version includes some improvements on glyph design and spacing, together with a collection of ornaments. Available for free to all designers who had already licenced Pradell from typerepublic before.

Pradell OpenType incluye nuevos caracteres útiles para la composición de textos de otras lenguas europeas basadas en el alfabeto latino. Incluye una mejora en el diseño de algunos caracteres, así como una colección extensa de ornamentos y viñetas. Superveloz article in ULTRABOLD eng The modular type system created by Joan Trochut in the 40's and digitaly revived by Andreu Balius and Àlex Trochut is now reviewed in an article at Ultrabold magazine (The journal of St. Bride Library, London) n.2.
